Health and Physical Education

Students learn how to enhance their own and others’ health, safety, well-being and physical activity participation in varied and changing contexts.

The Learning Area of Health is committed to providing:

  • A Physical Education program that develops positive attitudes, values and behaviours towards physical activity, as well as equipping students with the confidence and skills to remain physically active for their entire lifetime.
  • A Health program which develops capacities to make informed decisions and take actions that lead to a physically, socially and a mentally healthy lifestyle.

The Learning Area of Health aims to provide programs which encourage students to:

  • Develop positive attitudes, values and behaviours towards physical activity.
  • Develop their potential to be involved as a skilled participant in a range of sports, fitness and outdoor activities.
  • Develop an awareness of how fitness can promote health and wellbeing.
  • Develop an understanding of the causes of ill health and strategies to prevent ill health.
  • Develop an understanding of the balance of physical, social, spiritual and mental aspects of health in the effective functioning of individuals.
  • Identify and equip students with the skills to make informed and appropriate decisions to minimise harmful situations.

Years 7 and 8

The Year 7 and 8 Health and Physical Education program aims to expand students’ knowledge, understanding and skills to help them achieve successful outcomes in classroom, leisure, social, movement and online situations. Students learn how to take positive action to enhance their own and others’ health, safety and wellbeing. They do this as they examine the nature of their relationships and other factors that influence people’s beliefs, attitudes, opportunities, decisions, behaviours and actions.

Years 9 and 10

The Year 9 and 10 Health and Physical Education program aims to support students to refine and apply strategies for maintaining a positive outlook and evaluating behavioural expectations in different leisure, social, movement and online situations.

Students will learn to apply health and physical activity information to devise and implement personalised plans for maintaining healthy and active habits. They also experience different roles that contribute to successful participation in physical activity, and propose strategies to support the development of preventative health practices that build and optimise community health and wellbeing.

Years 11 and 12

Students may select elective VCE studies from the following:

  • Health and Human Development provides the opportunity for students to investigate health and human development in local, Australian and global communities. Health is a dynamic condition that is influenced by complex interrelationships between individuals and biomedical and behavioural factors, as well as physical and social environments.
  • Physical Education examines the biological, physiological, social and cultural influences on performance and participation in physical activity. It focuses on the interrelationship between motor learning and psychological, biomechanical, physiological and sociological factors that influence physical performances, and participation in physical activity.
  • VCE VET Sport and Recreation: provides students with the skills and knowledge to work in the sport and recreation industries. In Units 1 and 2, students can choose from a range of electives to create a program of their choice, including sport specific activities, conducting events, outdoor recreation or fitness programs. Units 3 and 4 offers scored assessment and includes core units such as plan and conduct programs, risk assessment, and conduct coaching with foundation level participants. Employment opportunities reflect roles such as recreation officer, activity operation officer, sport and recreation attendant, community activities officer or leisure services officer.
