Students learn how to enhance their own and others’ health, safety, well-being and physical activity participation in varied and changing contexts.
The Learning Area of Health is committed to providing:
- A Physical Education program that develops positive attitudes, values and behaviours towards physical activity, as well as equipping students with the confidence and skills to remain physically active for their entire lifetime.
- A Health program which develops capacities to make informed decisions and take actions that lead to a physically, socially and a mentally healthy lifestyle.
The Learning Area of Physical Education aims to provide programs which encourage students to:
- Develop positive attitudes, values and behaviours towards physical activity.
- Develop their potential to be involved as a skilled participant in a range of sports, fitness and outdoor activities.
- Develop an awareness of how fitness can promote health and wellbeing.
- Develop an understanding of the causes of ill health and strategies to prevent ill health.
- Develop an understanding of the balance of physical, social, spiritual and mental aspects of health in the effective functioning of individuals.
- Identify and equip students with the skills to make informed and appropriate decisions to minimise harmful situations.
Years 7 and 8
The Year 7 and 8 Health and Physical Education program aims to expand students’ knowledge, understanding and skills to help them achieve successful outcomes in classroom, leisure, social, movement and online situations. Students learn how to take positive action to enhance their own and others’ health, safety and wellbeing. They do this as they examine the nature of their relationships and other factors that influence people’s beliefs, attitudes, opportunities, decisions, behaviours and actions.
Years 9 and 10
The Year 9 and 10 Health and Physical Education program aims to support students to refine and apply strategies for maintaining a positive outlook and evaluating behavioural expectations in different leisure, social, movement and online situations.
Students will learn to apply health and physical activity information to devise and implement personalised plans for maintaining healthy and active habits. They also experience different roles that contribute to successful participation in physical activity, and propose strategies to support the development of preventative health practices that build and optimise community health and wellbeing.
The VET Sport and Coaching elective provides students with nationally recognised training in coaching, officiating, and participation in the sport and recreation industry. Students gain practical experience in leadership, planning, and delivering sporting activities while developing workplace skills and confidence.
Years 11 and 12
Students may select elective VCE studies from the following:
- VCE Health and Human Development (VCE) provides students the opportunity to explore the many dimensions of health and wellbeing — physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual — and how they are influenced by personal choices, community factors, healthcare systems and global issues. Across Units 1–4, students develop skills in analysing data, evaluating strategies and understanding how health can be promoted at local, national and international levels. This subject builds lifelong knowledge for making informed choices and prepares students for future pathways in health, education and community-focused careers.
- VCE Physical Education explores the complex interrelationships between biophysical (anatomical, biomechanical, physiological and skill acquisition) and psychosocial (psychological and sociocultural) principles to understand their role in producing and refining movement for participation and performance in physical activity, sport and exercise.
- VET Cert II Sports Coaching (Year 10). The Certificate II in Sport Coaching provides students with practical skills and knowledge to assist in community coaching roles. Students learn how to plan, deliver, and review coaching sessions, support inclusive participation, and apply basic first aid and safety procedures. The course offers hands-on experience working with beginner-level participants, preparing students for further study or entry-level coaching roles.
- VET Cert III Sports Aquatic and Recreation (VCE). The Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation is a practical course for students passionate about sport and fitness. It develops skills in coaching, delivering activities, facilitating groups, officiating, providing first aid, and supporting safe participation in recreation settings. Students gain real-world experience through clinics and group sessions, preparing them for entry-level roles or further study in the sport and recreation industry.
